REPORT of Mt Const R. Cawsey 3046
relative to Capture of Ned Kelly.

I have the honor to report for the
information of the Supt that I
arrived at Glen Rowan in company
with Sgt Steele & party about 5am
28th Ult Immediately took up a
position at the rear of Jones's Hotel
behind a large tree in company with
Const Moore. At about 6.15am
Const Moore drew my attention to
what we (at first thought was a
black-fellow) Const Healy challenged
him and he (Ned Kelly) replied by saying
fire away & be D_ to you, you cannot
hurt me. I am bullet proof. He (Ned
Kelly) then aimed his revolver at Healy

Healy then fired both barrells at him
but without effect. Constable Phillips
Arthur Moore & myself were also firing
at him. His attention was then drawn from
us, apparently by the fire of const Montiford
& a man whose name (I afterwards learnt)
was Dowsett. I then saw Sgt Steele leave
his tree & make towards Ned Kelly who was
crying out come out boys we will whip
the lot of the B_ I then heard Sgt Steele
say it is no use let us rush him. I then
saw Sgt Steele fire both barrells
at Ned Kelly, at about fifteen yards distance
I saw Ned Kelly stagger & fall & his helmet
dropped off. Sgt Steele was on to him in a
moment & disarmed him before any
one else arrived on the scene.
My reason & Const Moores for not leaving our tree
was that we momentarily expected Ned's comrades
to come out at his call.
